The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of February, is presenting a collection of artwork by students studying at the Shenandoah Valley Governor’s School for Arts and Humanities.
This unique creative program, begun in 2002, offers students in the Visual Arts Departments from Waynesboro, Staunton, and Augusta County the opportunity to spend each morning taking courses in art history and appreciation, humanities, and studio production, before returning to their home schools for afternoon classes.
One of the two studio courses is taught by a local artist, exposing students to a specific media and insight into the life of a working artist. Students take part in gallery visits, sketch trips, field trips, integrated arts activities with the Theatre Department and the production of artwork that is exhibition worthy. Each student of the Visual Arts Department will be represented in the show after participating in a jurying process by fellow art students.
This show is designed to teach the students the decision-making process involved in preparing to exhibit.
The Opening Reception will be held February 2, 5:00–7:00 p.m. and the public is encouraged to come and meet the artists.
In the Hallway Gallery artwork by The Blue Ridge Region Art Education Association, a chapter of the Virginia Art Education Association and the National Art Education Association, will be displayed. In an effort to provide an exhibition and recertification opportunity for its art educators the education association has partnered with the art center to showcase teachers as artists represented through their artwork in a variety of media. The exhibit is an intriguing look into the creative process of educators who devote the majority of their creative spirit to exposing children to the world of art.
RED is the theme for the art center Members’ Exhibit. The exhibit is a nod to Valentine’s Day and will be represented through the media of the artist’s choosing. Members are also invited to the Annual Business Meeting to be held at 3:00 p.m. on February 12.
Shenandoah Valley Art Center offers, for members of the center and community, workshops and classes taught by professional artists. The art classes presented in February are Clay: Handbuilding (garden art) taught by Donna Kincaid, five Thursdays beginning February 23, 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., Collage taught by Penny Taylor, February 11, 12:00 – 4:00 p.m., Paint Your Home in One Day! (Watercolor) taught by Peg Sheridan, February 18, and SAK, Saturday Art for Kids from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., a unique art experience for young artists. Contact the art center for specific information and pre-registration. Open studio opportunities in the Virginia Ross Education Studio are available to printmakers and ceramic artists.
