Skyline drive, Shenandoah national parkShenandoah National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway both re-opened to visitors Thursday with the end to the federal government shutdown.

Visitors can access public areas and roads immediately while facilities and other public services are brought back online.  Both had been closed since Oct. 1 due to the lapse in congressional appropriations.

“We are excited to be back at work and welcome visitors to Shenandoah National Park,” SNP Superintendent Jim Northup said. “Autumn is a particularly special season to enjoy all that Shenandoah has to offer.”

“October is historically the most visited month on the Parkway, and we’re pleased we can end our season on a high note, providing the high quality visitor experiences that people love about the Parkway,” Parkway Superintendent Mark Woods said.
