Wednesday afternoon, the GOP-controlled Senate Courts of Justice Committee refused to consider certifying Virginia Supreme Court Justice Jane Marum Roush.
Senator Donald McEachin (D-Henrico) moved that the committee certify the sitting justice. The committee chair immediately ruled the motion out of order. Senator McEachin then appealed the ruling of the chair; the committee upheld that ruling in an 8-7 vote.
Senator McEachin made the following statement:
“To refuse to even allow this woman to come forward for a simple vote on her qualifications is a violation of the customs of the Senate. That is just wrong. We are politicizing the court.
“Moreover, I disagree with Senator Norment – nothing is ‘predetermined.’ That’s why we have votes. That’s why we’re often surprised by the outcome of votes. But to strangle the process, and to stop a vote from happening – I find that to be less than our Virginia tradition.”
