Maryland starter Mike Shawaryn (11-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on 12 hits in six-plus innings. Brandon Lowe led the Terrapins offensively by going 3-for-4 and driving in one run.

The Cavaliers grabbed the lead with a run in the top of the third. Robbie Coman (Lake Worth, Fla.), making his first start of the NCAA Tournament, reached on a one-out single and came around to score on Papi’s two-out RBI single.

Maryland drew even with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Lowe’s two-out RBI single scored Kevin Martir for the first Terrapin run.

Virginia retook the lead in the top of the sixth. Towns doubled down the left field line on the first pitch of the inning and reached third on the play after the left-fielder misplayed the ball. He scored on an RBI groundout by John La Prise (Exton, Pa.).

The Cavaliers broke open the game with three runs in the top of the seventh. Pinero and Papi singled and Joe McCarthy (Scranton, Pa.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Shawaryn was pulled from the game. Fisher’s sacrifice fly off Maryland reliever Tayler Stiles drove in Pinero and Papi scored on an RBI single up the middle by Towns. With two outs, Downes’ RBI single scored McCarthy to extend the lead to 5-1.

Virginia made the score 6-1 with a run in the eighth inning. Pinero drew a one-out walk and after Papi singled, he scored on an RBI single by McCarthy.

The Cavaliers tacked on one more run in the ninth to increase the lead to 7-1. Coman drew a two-out walk and scored on Cogswell’s double.

Maryland put together a rally in the ninth inning, scoring twice to make the final score 7-3. Kyle Convissar reached on an error, moved to second on a single from Anthony Papio and scored on Martir’s RBI single. Papio scored when Charlie White grounded into a double play.
