The SafeWise Report announces the 30 Safest Cities in Virginia

virginia-blue-oversizeThe SafeWise Report released its “30 Safest Cities in Virginia” report this week, and the Town of Broadway in Rockingham County is at the top of the list.

Other local towns and cities on the list were Lexington at #8, Bridgewater at #12, Harrisonburg at #23, and Staunton at #25.

To compile the report, SafeWise used the most recent fbi crime data from 2012 to analyze and rank these cities, all with populations of at least 3,000 people, looking at crimes from part 1 of the fbi Unified Crime Report (UCR) reported crime data, which focuses on violent crimes (aggravated assault, forcible rape, murder, and robbery) as well as property crimes (arson, burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft).

From there, the report calculated the chances of these crimes happening out of a thousand in order to level the playing field for cities of varying populations. From all the cities in Virginia, the list was narrowed down to 30 and assigned rankings according to data provided by the FBI’s UCR report.

Virginia proves that cities of all sizes can be safe when the government and citizenry work in tandem,” SafeWise security analyst Alexia Chianis said. “Many of Virginia’s safe communities enjoy a rich history that is not only being preserved, but also celebrated in a number of innovative ways. As a result, many communities are infused with tourism dollars, and residents enjoy a supreme sense of pride.”
