Rocktown Divas puts focus on Downtown Harrisonburg

Contributors

Where some see empty office spaces in Downtown Harrisonburg, Sherrie Gordon sees untapped potential.

Gordon is the organizer of a one-night downtown shopping extravaganza titled  Rocktown Divas, set for Friday, Nov. 9, from 6-9 p.m. at The Hostetter Building and Oasis Art Gallery, 103 S. Main St., Downtown Harrisonburg.

Independent sales consultants for national companies including Cookie Lee Jewelry, Dove Chocolate, Origami Owl, Miche Bags, Rodan & Fields and Wildtree will set up shop for the night in offices owned by Denton Downtown Properties.

Gordon envisions the event as a showcase of the downtown office space owned by Denton, which is seeking to draw new tenants as Downtown Harrisonburg, like many area downtown districts, re-emerges from the recent economic downturn from the pressures put on small businesses over the last couple of years.

The aim is to get people to Downtown Harrisonburg for a night on the town, some early holiday shopping – and to see some of the available open spaces in the downtown district.

“And the best way to do that is to get people in the doors so they can see for themselves what we have available down here,” said Gordon, the owner of Shenandoah Concierge, a Harrisonburg-based business that provides an array of personal-concierge and event-planning services to local residents and businesses in the Shenandoah Valley.

Rocktown Divas is itself a bit of a public service.

“It’s a chance to do something on a Friday night, maybe without the kids, get some Christmas shopping done, socialize, and just have a good time out on the town,” said Gordon, an Atlanta transplant who quickly fell in love with her new hometown.

“There’s so much energy here!” Gordon said.

Linda Denton at Denton Downtown Properties is happy to have Gordon adding her energy to the effort downtown.

“This is a historic building in Downtown Harrisonburg. We’re excited to have people coming in, and the vendors coming in, to see what these spaces have to offer,” Denton said.
