Drivers using Interstates 64 and 81 in Rockbridge County can expect traffic delays and detours on Sunday mornings beginning April 28.
During the same time period, there will also be brief closures on Route 11 (Lee Highway). These traffic restrictions are for installation of power lines over I-64 and Route 11 in the Lexington area. All work is weather permitting.
The work is scheduled to take place from 7 a.m. to 12 noon on Sundays through early June. During this time period,
- I-64 eastbound will have a series of 10-12 minute “slow roll” closures between exit 55 (Route 11/Lexington) and exit 56 (the I-81 interchange).
- I-64 westbound will be closed during the entire 5-hour time period between the I-81 interchange and exit 55.
- I-81 northbound drivers who need to reach I-64 westbound will detour to exit 195 (Route 11/Lexington), and then follow Route 11 south to the I-64 interchange.
- I-81 southbound drivers who need to reach I-64 westbound will detour to exit 188B (Route 60/Lexington), follow Route 60 west and then Route 11 north to the I-64 interchange.
- Route 11 will have a series of 10-12 minute closures between the I-64 interchange and Route 39 (Maury River Road).
Law enforcement officers will assist with traffic control. Variable message boards on both interstates will advise motorists of the slow-roll closures and detour routes back to I-64. There will be no traffic restrictions Memorial Day weekend (May 26, 2019).
