Richmond Flying Squirrels, through the mist, top Bowie, 3-1
The Richmond Flying Squirrels (14-10) held off the Bowie Baysox (13-12), 3-1, in front of 8,473 at The Diamond on Tuesday afternoon. The entire game was played with a light mist falling at the ballpark.
The Baysox used a gift double to plate the first run of the game against lefty Jack Snodgrass in the top of the second inning. With one out, Garabez Rosa popped up behind first base. Second baseman Kelby Tomlinson overran the ball, and slipped trying to recover. He couldn’t make the play, and Rosa reached with a double. Bowie quickly capitalized as Ronald Bermudez followed with a single back through the middle to plate Rosa.
The Squirrels leveled the ledger against lefty Jake Pettit in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, Tomlinson laced a double into left-center field. Tomlinson was balked to third and Eliezer Zambrano tied the game, 1-1, with a single into left field.
Snodgrass was lifted from the ballgame in the fifth inning. He did not factor in the decision, working 4 2/3 innings. He permitted the lone run on seven hits, walked none and struck out two.
Richmond grabbed the lead for the first time as they chased Pettit from the ballgame in the sixth inning. Myles Schroder opened the frame with a single. He promptly stole second base. jarrett parker followed and cracked a triple through the alley in left-center field. Schroder strolled in for a 2-1 lead. Pettit departed following the three-bagger.
Right-hander Marcel Prado entered in relief and Angel Villalona greeted him with a double to the wall in left field. Parker scored for a 3-1 advantage.
Pettit (1-3) was charged with all three runs on eight hits over five innings plus two batters. He took the loss, walking two and striking out three.
Lefty Phil McCormick earned the win for the Squirrels – his first of the year. He worked 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief behind Snodgrass. Lefty Josh Osich then handled the eighth inning. Right-hander Derek Law earned his sixth save of the season, handling the Baysox in order in the ninth inning.
Game three of the four-game series is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday night at The Diamond. Richmond RHP Clayton Blackburn (1-2, 1.80) will make the start against Bowie RHP Tyler Wilson (4-0, 2.76). Pregame coverage will begin on Sports Radio 910 and SportsRadio910.com at 6:05 p.m.
