Richmond Flying Squirrels losing streak now at six

richmond flying squirrelsThe Richmond Flying Squirrels failed to score on Friday at PNG Field, falling to the Altoona Curve, 7-0. The loss extended Richmond’s losing streak to six games.

Altoona (10-10) jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning against Richmond (7-11) left-hander Garrett Williams (Loss, 0-2). Jared Oliva singled to lead off the inning and came in to score three batters later on a sacrifice fly.

The Curve added another run in the second without needing a hit. Following a walk and a hit-by-pitch to start the inning, Jerrick Suiter scored on a throwing error by Jalen Miller to double Altoona’s lead to 2-0.

Altoona broke the game open in the third, using four hits—including a two-run double by Hunter Owen and an RBI triple by Mitchell Tolman–to score three more runs, making it a 5-0 game.

Curve righty James Marvel (Win, 3-1) needed just 79 pitches to complete seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out three and walking two. Marvel has now completed 14 scoreless inning against the Flying Squirrels over his last two starts.

Altoona added a run in the fifth and one more in the sixth against right-hander Connor Overton to round out the scoring.

The loss is Richmond’s third shutout loss to Altoona in the last seven days.

The Flying Squirrels continue their series with the Altoona Curve on Saturday at PNG Field, when right-hander Alfred Gutierrez (0-1, 4.82 ERA) starts for Richmond against Altoona right-hander Pedro Vasquez (1-0, 1.59). First pitch is set for 4 p.m., and coverage begins with the Flying Squirrels Pregame Warmup presented by Air Force Reserve at 4:30.

Richmond returns to The Diamond to begin a six-game homestand on Thursday, May 2. As part of the 10 memorable past promotions series, fans in attendance can enter to win a gently-used car. The winner will be announced on the field postgame before In-Your-Face Fireworks.
