Republicans vote against making voting easier

lawTuesday morning, at a 7:30 a.m. committee meeting in which the location had changed and day of the meeting had been moved up by two days, Republican members of the Privileges and Elections – Elections Subcommittee essentially killed four bills (the only four bills heard, all patroned by Democrats) that would make the process of voting easier and more accessible for already-eligible voters.

  • HB 292 (Herring) was passed by indefinitely, on a vote of 4-2 with Del. Landes absent
  • HB 56 (Kory) was passed by indefinitely, on a vote of 4-2 with Del. Cole absent
  • HB 531 (Murphy) was passed by indefinitely, on a vote of 3-2 with Dels. Landes and Adams absent
  • HB 68 (Sullivan) was passed by indefinitely, on a vote of 5-2

“Increasing access to the ballot box for every citizen who is eligible to take advantage of this privilege should be one of the most important objectives of this committee–and every elected official in the General Assembly,” said Delegate Mark Sickles (43rd – Fairfax), who is a member of the Privileges and Elections – Elections Subcommittee. “Today, the Elections Subcommittee on a series of party line votes failed to pass several common sense measures that could have provided fairer and more accessible elections while easing the burden on our localities. The Subcommittee even denied senior citizens over 70 years the right to vote early without having to leave town.”
