Remembering the Shenandoah Valley’s muley cows and cattle drives

newspaperThe Middlebrook Library Station will host a free program called Muley Cows and Mutton Soup at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 16. Part of the Middlebrook Living History Series, the lecture will feature noted local historian nancy sorrells.

The program will showcase the Valley’s history of cattle and mountain top grazing, from ear notches to cattle drives. It will also discuss the forgotten muley cow.

Sorrells says, “Many people associate great cattle drives with Texas and the Wild West, but cattle were once a key industry of the Valley.”
