Read For the Win encourages summertime reading

augusta county libraryAugusta County Library is offering children ages birth to grade twelve the opportunity to Read For the Win June 8 through July 30. Children can register online at www.AugustaCountyLibrary.org and log their reading hours to earn prizes. Both the theme and the prizes for this year’s summer reading games relate to the Summer Olympics—except the library’s games are officiated by a skateboarding book character named Froggy.

The library is also hosting a series of special summer programs at all five of its locations. Events for grades K to 5 include learning about the food chain with critters from the Wildlife Center of Virginia, playing historical games with The Frontier Culture Museum, Wacky Olympics, yoga, crafts and an interactive trivia show. Teens can participate in gaming, a fandom cupcake workshop and a Teen Movie Night. Preschoolers will like story times and puppet shows and the entire family will enjoy Movie Night on Mondays.

This summertime programming is not only designed to be fun, but also serves an important role. Children’s Services Librarian Tammy Coulter says, “Studies have shown that children who do not read over the summer can lose up to two months of learning by the time they return to school in the fall. However, children who participate in a summer reading program can actually improve their test scores on reading and math.”

Read for the Win is made possible by the support of the Friends of the Augusta County Library. Augusta County Library has locations in Churchville, Craigsville, Deerfield, Fishersville and Middlebrook.  For additional information and a complete schedule of programs, contact the library at 540-885-3961 or 540-949-6354 or visitwww.AugustaCountyLibrary.org.
