Quinnipiac: Donald Trump leads Republican presidential field

trumpGood news for Donald Trump, bad news for Donald Trump. The good news: a new Quinnipiac University poll has him building on his lead among Republican presidential candidates.

The bad news is that Trump also tops the list of Republican candidates that Republican voters would not vote for.

First to the good: Trump was at 28 percent in the latest Quinnipiac poll, released on Thursday, up from his 20 percent showing in a July 30 Quinnipiac poll.

Ben Carson was the next choice for GOP voters at 12 percent, with Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio at 7 percent each.

Now back to the bad: voters were asked to list the candidates that they would not support, and Trump topped that list with 26 percent of Republican voters saying they would not support the billionaire TV personality.

Bush was second on the no way list at 18 percent.

“Donald Trump soars; Ben Carson rises; Jeb Bush slips and some GOP hopefuls seem to disappear. Trump proves you don’t have to be loved by everyone, just by enough Republicans to lead the GOP pack,” said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

One more bit of bad news for Trump in the Quinnipiac polling: he trails the top three Democrats in hypothetical general election matchups.

Joe Biden tops Trump, 48 percent to 40 percent. Hillary Clinton has a 45-41 lead on Trump, and Bernie Sanders leads Trump 44-41.
