Attorney General-elect Mark Herring today announced the appointment of two more senior officials in the Office of Attorney General. Herring will be sworn in as Virginia’s 48th Attorney General on Jan. 11. Stuart Raphael, currently a partner with the Litigation Team of Hunton & Williams LLP, will serve as Virginia’s Solicitor General.

According to the bulletin, the marital status of a couple for Virginia income tax purposes is based on whether the couple is considered married for federal income tax purposes.

The Senate voted 55-38 on Thursday to proceed with a vote on the nomination of Pattie Millett to serve on the U.S. Appeals Court for the D.C. Circuit. The weird way that things work in Washington, that majority wasn’t enough for the Senate to proceed with its consideration of the nomination to the court, which is down three judges currently.

The reality is that the history of that tragic war is actually comprised of millions of unique stories, some told on the battlefield and some on the homefront. This week, the United States House of Representatives voted to slash food assistance to poor families and also defund the Affordable Care Act. Many in that body are willing to shut down the government because they are opposed to a health care law that Congress passed, that the President signed, that the Supreme Court affirmed and that has survived more than 40 Congressional repeal votes.
