There was something old-fashioned and even spiritual about selecting the time of one’s own death and then inviting friends over. I have learned a lot about life, love, and death from the Day of the Dead and Nearings’ passage over thirty years ago, as well as from other death experiences. Death can be a teacher, if one moves beyond denial into acceptance—harder in some cases than others. A death awareness movement seems to be growing and takes various forms.

Chris Graham: Marriage equality now the law of the land?

Virginia is hardly the leader of the pack in the area of marriage equality, but maybe we can be an interesting bellwether. Just as the state’s votes for Barack Obama for president in 2008 and 2012 broke the Solid South politically, maybe today’s move by Attorney General Herring can ignite a wave of change in the South regarding the last remaining civil rights issue of our time.

McDonnell announces task force on mental health services

Gov. Bob McDonnell today announced the membership for the newly-created Task Force on Improving Mental Health Services and Crisis Response. The membership includes leaders in the mental health field, law enforcement communities, the judicial system, private hospitals, and individuals receiving mental health services and their families.

McAuliffe nominates Maurice Jones as Secretary of Commerce and Trade

Gov. McDonnell announces matching tourism grants

Bob McDonnell announced today that more than $750,000 in matching grant funds will be awarded to 42 local tourism initiatives as part of Virginia Tourism Corporation’s (VTC) Marketing Leverage Grant program. The grants are designed to help local and regional tourism entities attract more visitors by leveraging local marketing dollars.
