Kim also played in the 2009 and 2013 World Baseball Classics, earning All-Tournament Team honors as a designated hitter in 2009 after batting .393/.514/.500 (11-28) with three doubles, four RBI, six runs scored, and seven walks in nine games.

He led South Korea to the 2014 Asian Games gold medal and in 2015, paced South Korea to the WBSC Premier 12 championship, was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, and was selected to the All-World Team as an outfielder. He would become the first Korean-born player in club history when he makes his Major League debut.
