DavisUpdate: Wednesday, 4:59 p.m. Darin E. Davis, 47, was detained at the Colony House shooting that occurred early this morning. Davis was subsequently arrested and charged with voluntary manslaughter, a class 5 felony. He is being held at Middle River Regional Jail without bond.

The victim has been identified as Gary Dustin Mawyer, 34, of Stuarts Draft. Investigators are trying to determine why he was on the motel property at the time of the incident.

Investigators believe that Mawyer had been in the parking lot before being approached by Davis, a resident of the Colony House. A verbal altercation escalated before a gun was discharged. Davis is alleged to have fired a single shot from a 9mm pistol, striking Mawyer in the upper left arm. Mawyer collapsed a few feet from where he was shot, and died at the scene.

The victim was transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke for an autopsy. The investigation into the shooting is active and ongoing.
