#30 with a bullet: Remember when the UVA offense was the secret ingredient to the second-ranked Cavs’ run of success?
Five games with Justin Anderson on the sideline has the offensive efficiency rating falling like temperatures in the Mid-Atlantic.
KenPom now has Virginia rated 30th nationally in offensive efficiency with 1.117 points per possession.
The Cavs were rated in the top 10 in offensive efficiency most of the season before losing Anderson in the first half of their 52-47 win over Louisville on Feb. 7.
Including that game, Virginia has seen its productivity drop to .942 points per possession in its last five games, all wins.
Close second: Defensive efficiency has not been a problem in Anderson’s absence.
After Florida State scored 41 points on 62 possessions Sunday night, .661 points per possession, UVA is just a sliver behind Kentucky in defensive efficiency in KenPom, surrendering .845 points per possession.
Kentucky allows .844 points per possession.
In the past five games, Virginia has allowed .822 points per possession.
One jumper: A quick look at the stats tells us that Virginia scored 34 points in the paint, and had 14 free throws.
To get to 51 points, we throw in the three-pointer from London Perrantes at the start of the second half.
That was the one jump shot that the Cavs made all night.
Let’s look at that another way: Virginia made one jump shot all night, was 14-of-27 from the foul line, and beat a decent ACC team (that came in having won three of its last four, the loss by three to a full-strength Duke team two weeks ago) by 10 without its point guard and second-leading scorer.
Big nights from the post: Anthony Gill had 13 points (3-of-5 from the field, 7-of-11 from the line, KenPom offensive rating of 114) and nine rebounds in 31 minutes, and Darion Atkins had 11 points (5-of-7 from the field, 1-of-4 from the line, KenPom offensive rating of 97) and two rebounds in 28 minutes.
No Tobey: Mike Tobey had another quiet night, scoring three points, all at the line, and pulling down five rebounds in 13 minutes.
Quiet night for Nolte, except in +/- Evan Nolte had two points, on a fast-break layup that was Virginia’s first score of the game. Two rebounds, one steal. Missed two free throws in the final minute. And yet in his 29 minutes, Nolte had a +14, the best +/- on the team.
Somebody’s playing defense.
