The Box and 1 Podcast tackles sports, urban culture, gospel

box and 1 podcastJohn C. Richards Jr., Jeremy Hartman and Chris Lassiter have developed a weekly Internet radio show entitled The Box and 1 Podcast.

The show discusses sports, current events and urban culture through the lens of the gospel.

“All three of us write and blog, but we saw a need,” said Lassiter, explaining the purpose of the podcast. “Some of the people we were hoping to influence might listen to a podcast before they would read a book or a blog. We figured we’d try to communicate to people in ways that best engage them.”

Richards (johnrichardsjr.com) has practiced law and served in vocational ministry. Author of the book The Tenacity of Hope, Richards has degrees from Morehouse College, Howard University School of Law and Fuller Theological Seminary.

Hartman (hartmanbasketball.com) is a basketball trainer. He coached a high school girls’ basketball team to a state championship in 2012. Hartman has a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Scranton.

Author of the book You’re Grounded and the forthcoming book Grits and the Grimels, Lassiter worked bi-vocationally as a sports reporter and a campus ministry leader.

Bonded by their humor and similar passions for music, sports, family and theological topics, the trio’s chemistry is what makes the podcast work.

Hartman and Lassiter were basketball teammates at a small Division III school in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. The two, who both live in Staunton, remained close friends after their Shenandoah University hoops careers.

Lassiter met Richards when Richards was presenting at a writing panel discussion at The Legacy Conference at Chicago’s Moody Bible Institute. Richards lives in the Chicago area. The two men stayed in touch, and together the three men agreed to shoot a pilot podcast episode earlier this year.

The three friends have recorded 16 episodes to date. The Box And 1 Podcast is available on the johnrichardsjr.com Website and in iTunes. The Twitter and Instagram accounts for the podcast can be found at @boxand1podcast.
