Contractors have nearly finished phase one in the reconstruction of the exit 310 interchange along Interstate 81 in Frederick County. Newly built portions of Route 37, Route 642 (Tasker Road) and Route 847 (Hillandale Lane) are scheduled to open on Tuesday, June 14, just east of the I-81 interchange at Kernstown. Motorists should be alert for significant traffic pattern changes.
Route 37 will extend about 0.33 mile to the east, where it will split into eastbound and westbound ramps that intersect with the relocated portion of Route 642. The realigned Route 847 will intersect with Route 642 just north of Route 37.
The Virginia Department of Transportation will use signs, pavement markings and variable message boards to advise drivers of these changes. Virginia State Police will also provide assistance when the new traffic patterns are implemented. They are scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 14, weather permitting. In the event of inclement weather, the traffic changes will be rescheduled for the next available clear day.
Moving these intersections further east allows contractors to reconstruct the I-81 interchange with a “spread diamond” configuration, which spreads the ramps outward and widens them with dual right- and left-turn lanes. Just west of the interstate, the exit 310 project will also modify the ramps at the Route 37 interchange with Route 11.
General Excavation Inc. (GEI) of Warrenton, Va. was awarded a construction contract valued at nearly $25 million. The exit 310 project is scheduled for completion in May 2018.
