New Second Wind Session to Begin at Maury River Senior Center

secondwindlogoMaury River Senior Center is continuing series of classes open to those who are 50 and older; “Second Wind” winter session classes will begin January 21 and run for 10 weeks. These offerings will all be scheduled for late afternoons and early evenings to accommodate the schedules of those who are working.

“These are definitely not ‘Senior Center’ programs,” said Jeri Schaff, the center’s director. “They have been specifically designed to appeal to Boomers, and we are hoping they meet the needs of this large population that has influenced change throughout their lives.”

“We will definitely continue to offer programs for our traditional clients who are 60 and older, but we saw a need for services that appeal to the interests of those of us who are finding we finally have time for ourselves, and want to make the most of it,” Schaff explained.

Free demonstration classes have been scheduled to all individuals to try out or observe a class before they enroll.

“Second Wind” will include the following classes in its Winter 2013 session:

Tai Chi

is an ancient Chinese discipline using a continuous series of controlled, usually slow, movements to improve physical and mental well-being. Recently, the National Institutes of Health reported that Tai Chi, more than any other exercise program, is effective in improving balance and preventing falls. TJ Keaton will lead this class on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:45-6:45pm, beginning January 22. Cost for the 20 sessions is $100. A free demonstration class will be offered on Tuesday, January 8 from 5:45-6:45pm.

Zumba

is increasing in popularity across the country. Zumba participants can enjoy dancing with a Latin beat that is modified for well-used joints and “been too busy” bodies. Leader Sandra Budel says that Zumba participants can expect to sweat, build cardio strength, and tone their muscles in this class that will meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00-6:00pm, beginning January 21. Cost for the 20 sessions is $100. A free demonstration class will be offered on Monday, January 7 from 5:00-6:00pm.

Chair Yoga

Promotes relaxation and relieves stress, loosens and limbers stiff joints, improves posture, strengthens muscles, and improves balance, without ever leaving your chair. This class is appropriate for all fitness levels, notes Jeri Schaff, who will lead the class that will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-4:30pm beginning January 22. Cost for the 20 sessions is $100. A free demonstration class will be offered on Tuesday, January 8 from 3:30-4:30pm.

Schaff noted that all classes have limited space, and may be cancelled for insufficient enrollment. The deadline for registration is January 16. Registration materials are available at Maury River Senior Center, located at 2137 Magnolia Avenue, Buena Vista, by calling the center at 261-7474, by emailing Jonni Lyle at [email protected], or on the center’s website, www.MauryRiverSC.org.
