New parking regulations at Gypsy Hill Park in Staunton

Gypsy Hill Park 3Parking on the left side of Constitution Drive in Gypsy Hill Park in Staunton between the Thornrose Avenue entrance and the park’s main gate is now prohibited at all times.

New “No Parking” signs have been posted from the Thornrose Avenue entrance to the main entrance, and the Staunton Police Department’s bike team will monitor the area and issue warnings to those who park illegally during the next two weeks. After the two-week grace period, tickets will be given to people who violate the new parking regulation.

Special event parking will continue to be permitted on the left side of Constitution Drive in the area across from the park’s tennis courts.

Historically, the City has allowed left-side parking around the perimeter of the Gypsy Hill Park Bandstand during special events; however, a recent incident in that area prompted the new parking rule. First responders were significantly delayed in reaching a person in need of medical attention, because event attendees had to move their cars from the left side of the road to allow access.

Captain Mark Harlow of the Staunton Police Department said he recognizes that the new rule may be inconvenient, but it’s necessary for the public’s safety.

“First responders and Fire and Rescue vehicles require quick and safe access to the scene of an emergency,” he said. “We’re taking preventive measures to ensure that a similar situation doesn’t occur again.”
