New online portal gives Virginians lawyer referral access 24/7

courtThe Virginia State Bar’s legal referral service just got easier to use. The Virginia Lawyer Referral Service has rolled out an online portal (www.vlrs.net) that now gives users 24/7 access to a panel of qualified lawyers across the commonwealth in good standing with the VSB.

Those in search of a lawyer can filter for geographic region and the topic of their legal needs and then be matched with an appropriate lawyer. For $35, consumers get an up-to-30-minute consultation with that lawyer at their convenience – and with no strings attached.

The online portal gives users three ways to access the VLRS now. Those seeking a Virginia lawyer may still call during regular business hours or email [email protected] for a referral, or opt to use the new portal instead.

Last year, the Virginia Lawyer Referral Service fielded nearly 18,000 calls, and more than 4,300 referrals were made to attorneys throughout the commonwealth. According to the VLRS coordinator, Toni Dunson, Virginia’s legal needs vary throughout the year: Bankruptcy lawyers are needed in January; driving tickets and accident-related legal needs spike in summer; educational lawsuits are considered in August; and, divorces are sought in December.

The Virginia Lawyer Referral Service is one of many services the VSB provides to assist people in finding legal counseling. The agency promotes Virginia Free Legal Answers for low-income legal access (virginia.freelegalanswers.org); assists legal services agencies throughout the state; and operates a Clients’ Protection Fund (www.vsb.org/site/public/clients-protection-fund) for those who have been a victim of lawyer malfeasance.
