Mojo Saturday Night: The best-kept secret in Waynesboro

The June 16 installment of The Gateway’s Mojo Saturday Night, the monthly blues show hosted by Kevin Chisnell, features blues journeyman Jack Roy, The Lascivious Deacons and blues piano master Roddy Barnes.

Mojo Saturday Night debuted in September of 2011, and the shows have had highly acclaimed reviews with the likes of the Li’l Bill Band, Lisa Miller, Barbara Martin, Fatty Lumpkin and the Love Hogs and Virginia Beach’s award winning artist, Narissa Bond. “We’ve had a couple of close to full houses, but I want to pack The Gateway,” Chisnell muses.

The Gateway, at 329 W. Main St in Waynesboro, is the live performance space until The Wayne opens. “If we’re going to have an opportunity to have quality, live blues in this beautiful theater in the next year or so, we need to support it,” Chisnell says.

On June 16, the show will be a barn burner.

“Roddy Barnes is the type of musician/entertainer that comes to this area only once in a blue moon”, he says. “He has been all over the world, played with world class musicians, while working as the pianist for The Uppity Blues Women, quite an exclusive gig.”

A sample of Roddy’s reviews:

…”an able songwriter whose songs are often laced with ironic wit; an expressive vocalist with a strong, clear tenor; and a masterful piano player who can romp with the boogie and play the blues.” – Blues Blast Magazine

“Barnes’ excellent touch on the keys drives the tunes with undeniable authenticity.” – Ames Arnold, Style Magazine Richmond.

From The Uppity Blues Women:

* “Roddy Barnes is an excellent songwriter and singer but his piano playing truly stands out. He plays with an exquisite combination of wit and passion which really brings life to his music.” – Ann Rabson, Songwriter/Recording Artist, Alligator Records

* “Roddy performs every song as though it is his very last performance. He lays his soul bare…with his writing, his playing, his singing. Such honesty is rare —in music and in life.” Gaye Adegbalola, Alligator Records

* “With his powerful piano style, and his world-weary, yet playful, vocals, I feel as if I’m time-traveling back to a juke joint in the 20’s on the old-timey feel of his music… He’s truly a blue-plate special in the world’s musical diner…eat him up!” – Andra Faye, Alligator Records

“We’re fortunate to be able to have these performers come to this area, have them in an intimate venue such as The Gateway and to be able to sit back and let the blues take you away,” says Chisnell.

Jack Roy, Hill Country blues guitarist, with Kevin Chisnell on harp, will open the show with some rousing traditional blues, followed by The Lascivious Deacons, a dynamic blues duo from Staunton, supporting their recent CD release, “Undemultigated Shebacle.”

It’s a night of blues you don’t want to miss.

Mojo Saturday Night at The Gateway is a lounge-type listening venue, with snacks, soft drinks, beer and wine available. Admission for this show is $10. Doors open at 7:30pm and the performance begins at 8pm. For more information go to www.wtagateway.com or call the box office at 540-943-9999.
