Men’s soccer: VMI loses 2-1 at Appalachian State

vmiDespite tying the game midway through the second half on its first goal of the season, the VMI men’s soccer team fell by a 2-1 score to host Appalachian State Saturday night in Boone, North Carolina.

After the Keydets (0-3) found themselves down 1-0 at the half, sophomore forward Willson Tuck took possession of the ball deep in Mountaineer territory and volleyed it over the goalie for his second career goal and VMI’s first of the year. The Virginia Beach native took advantage of VMI’s only shot attempt on the night, scoring in the 65th minute (64:01).

“I’m very proud of the team tonight,” said VMI head coach Michael Bonelli. “This was our best performance of the season and there is a lot to build on. We have a very young and energetic group that is only going to get better every day.”

The Mountaineers proved dominant on the offensive end and allowed VMI limited opportunities in the attacking third of the pitch. App State finished the match with 17 shot attempts including 10 in the second half. Ian Bennett struck first for App State in the 36th minute of the first half. Moment’s after Tuck’s goal to tie the game, the Mountaineers’ Justin Pruitt scored the game-winning goal just two minutes later in the 67th minute (66:17).

VMI freshman goalie earned six saves in the loss.

The Keydets return to action next Friday, Sept. 7 with a home matchup with Manhattan College. Kick off is set for a 4 p.m. start at Patchin Field.
