Men’s soccer: VMI blitzed at UNC-Greensboro in road finale

vmi_logoCompeting in the final regular season road game, the VMI men’s soccer team succumbed to host UNC Greensboro by an 11-0 score Tuesday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Spartans attacked the entire 90 minutes, outshooting the Keydets by a 32-3 margin as six different UNCG players netted goals during the match. Leeroy Maguraushe put the Spartans on the board at the 17:30 mark before Matteo Busio added another score at 24:38 for a 2-0 lead midway through the first half.

Jacques Francois earned a hat trick in the outing, scoring one minute later (25:14) and went on to put one in just before the half (41:38) and minutes after the intermission (48:38). Busio put UNCG up 7-0 with his second goal of the game before Ben Burdon knocked in two consecutive goals to increase the advantage to 9-0 with 30 minutes remaining.

UNCG was paced by Francois’ three goals on seven shots while Busio, Maguraushe and Burdon each netted two goals.

Three separate Keydets notched shot attempts during the game, including Hunter Morgan, Jackson Rowady and Dan Geyer. Spartan keeper Jon Milligan earned the win in a complete game while Alex Guerra picked up the loss for VMI, splitting time with freshman Robert Allen, who played the final 20 minutes.

VMI returns home for a Senior Day matchup with Wofford on Saturday, Oct. 31. Kickoff is slated for a 2 p.m. start at Patchin Field. Seniors Hunter Morgan, David Harpen, Travis Borkey, Andrew Starnes, Eric Friese and Alex Guerra will be honored in recognition of playing their final game at Patchin.
