uva soccerUVA redshirt sophomore Colin Shutler (Broadlands, Va.) was named the ACC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week after a 1-0 shutout of No. 19 New Hampshire on Friday (Aug. 24).

Shutler, who made his first career start, faced 11 shots and made two saves including a critical stop in the 75th minute on a New Hampshire breakaway opportunity. The save setup the opportunity for Joe Bell to win the game with 21 seconds left in regulation.

Through Tuesday, Virginia is the only team in the ACC that hasn’t surrendered a goal. Dating back to last season, the Cavaliers have kept opponents off the scoreboard in four of the last six games.

Shutler is the first Virginia goalkeeper to take home the Defensive Player of the Week Award since 2016 when former teammate Jeff Caldwell shared the honor on with two other keepers. Virginia has had a defensive player recognized by the ACC in each of the last four seasons.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Thursday (Aug. 30) with a home game against Elon at 7 p.m. before taking on Maryland in a neutral site game at Audi Field on Monday, Sept. 3.
