bridgewater eaglesJonathan Min scored late in the first overtime session Wednesday evening to lift Bridgewater College to a crucial 2-1 victory over Hampden-Sydney in ODAC men’s soccer action.

The victory guaranteed the Eagles a spot in the upcoming conference tournament.

The contest was scoreless until the 66th minute when Ryan Killen put the Tigers on the board first.

Bridgewater needed less than two minutes to answer as Garrett Shan netted the equalizer to tie the contest at one goal apiece.

Both teams had chances in the closing minutes of regulation but Eagles’s keeper Mark Davis and his Hampden-Sydney counterpart Cameron McFarlane were both up to the task in the waning minutes. Each keeper recorded three saves down the stretch to send the game to overtime.

Hampden-Sydney earned a pair of corner kicks early in the overtime, but the Eagles’ defense turned away each attempt.

Bridgewater was able to cuunter with pressure on the Tigers’ defense. Thomas White put a shot on frame, but McFarlane was in position for the save. The save resulted in a corner opportunity for the Eagles, but the Tigers thwarted the attempt.

The Eagles kept the ball in their offensive end and Min scored the game winner at the 97:13 mark.

Bridgewater held a slim 14-11 edge in total shots while the Tigers owned a slim 9-7 margin in corner kicks. Both goalkeepers finished the contest with five saves.

The Eagles will close out the regular season Saturday afternoon when they host Washington and Lee at 1:00 p.m. Bridgewater will honor its three seniors – Davis, Max Chacon and Jose Rodriguez – who will be playing their final regular season home game.
