Friday is Scarf Night; the first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive the 2015 Virginia Soccer scarf. There also is a pregame Kid Zone, where children can enjoy inflatables, a face painter and balloon artist for one hour prior to the start of the game.
Virginia-NC State Series
Virginia is 46-17-8 all-time versus North Carolina State. UVa is 10-1-1 against NC State since 2004 and is unbeaten in its last 17 home matches against the Wolfpack, dating to an NCSU triumph in 1980.
UVa and NC State last played on Sept. 20, 2013, when they battled to a 3-3 draw after 110 minutes at Klöckner Stadium. UVa rallied from two goals down and tied the game at three in the final seconds of the 90th minute.
Cavaliers Blank JMU, 2-0
Virginia picked up a 2-0 win over James Madison Tuesday at Klöckner Stadium. Jake Rozhansky and Jean-Christophe Koffi scored for the Cavaliers as UVa recorded its second clean sheet of the season. Both teams recorded 13 shots, although UVa put seven on target while JMU had four shots on goal. JMU held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks and committed 14 fouls to five for Virginia.
Busy Stretch Continues
Virginia is in the midst of a challenging portion of its schedule. The Cavaliers will play 13 matches in 43 days, with midweek games during six straight weeks. UVa does not get a full week off until a seven-day break between matches against Pitt (Oct. 16) and Virginia Tech (Oct. 23).
Thomsen, Wharton Named Senior CLASS Award Candidates
Virginia’s Scott Thomsen and Todd Wharton are among 30 candidates nationally for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for men’s soccer. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The candidate class will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot, to be voted on by the public. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2015 NCAA Men’s College Cup® championship in December.
Koffi the First Rookie to Break Through
While five Virginia freshmen have played during UVa’s first five matches, Jean-Christophe Koffi was the first to break the scoring column with his goal Tuesday against JMU. Malcolm Dixon has started four of five matches at right back, while Derrick Etienne, Edward Opoku and Koffi all have contributed significant minutes. Wesley Wade also has seen time off the bench in a pair of matches. The quintet is part of the Cavaliers’ incoming recruiting class that was tabbed the No. 2 best class nationally.
Noting NC State
Ranked as high as No. 20 nationally, NC State is 5-1-0 with its only loss coming at Davidson on Sept. 7, 2-1. The Wolfpack is coming off a 2-1 win over Wofford on Tuesday. NC State boasts a balanced offense, with four players scoring a pair of goals apiece through six matches. ACC coaches selected the Wolfpack to finish fifth in the Atlantic Division.
Up Next: VCU
Virginia travels to Richmond on Monday for a 7 p.m. game against VCU at Sports Backers Stadium. The Cavaliers then head to No. 2 Notre Dame next Friday (Sept. 25) in a rematch of an 2014 NCAA round of 16 game, won 1-0 by the Cavaliers.
