McAuliffe: Cuccinelli should recuse himself from gas royalty case

terry mcauliffe2Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe today called on Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli to recuse his office from all involvement in an ongoing royalty case in Southwest Virginia. A federal judge expressed “shock” last week that Cuccinelli’s office was offering legal advice to companies who have not paid royalties to Southwest Virginia landowners.

“Virginians deserve answers and peace of mind.  A federal judge is saying that the actions of Ken Cuccinelli’s office were ‘shocking,’ but Cuccinelli is staunchly defending his office’s actions and saying nothing is wrong,” said McAuliffe.  “It is very clear that the Attorney General is unwilling to police himself or avoid conflicts of interest. Therefore, I think that the Attorney General needs to once again immediately recuse his office from this litigation – too many questions have been raised about whether he is really representing Virginia.

“When he was found to have unreported gifts and stock in Star Scientific, it took a lot of public pressure for him to recuse himself before he finally agreed to do so. In this case, it makes sense to just step away now instead of repeating the same drawn out process again.”
