Lecture, with Claudia Bernardi: “Labyrinths of History/ From the Undeniable Truth of DNA to the Tenacity of Dreams.” 7 p.m. Francis Auditorium in the Pearce Science Center.
Claudia Bernardi is an internationally acclaimed artist and human rights activist, and an artist-in-residence at Mary Baldwin.
Born in Buenos Aires in 1955, Bernardi experienced first-hand the fear and trauma of living in Argentina during the first three years of the “Dirty War,” the seven-year reign by a military junta that inflicted cruelty, injustice, and murder upon its own citizens.
Bernardi is a professor at the California College of the Arts. She has also taught at the Universidad del Salvador, Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires, Mills College, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
She has led Mary Baldwin College students on trips to El Salvador where they have participated in the activities of the School of Art and Open Studio of Perquin, which Bernardi founded and directs.

Teaching Peacemaking to Women in Ethiopia.
Tseganesh Ayele Asele is a clergy-person, and her areas of study include theology and leadership with an emphasis on conflict resolution and peacemaking. She also has extensive experience in Gender and Diversity Studies. As the Director of the Women’s Dept. she has special training in the roles of women and peacemaking and has emphasized this by leading courses and workshops for women across Ethiopia. Rev. Ayele Asele is married and has two children.
She visits MBC under the sponsorship of the International Peacemaker Program of the PCUSA, and her visits is co-sponsored by the Spencer Center for Civic Engagement, the Philosophy and Religious Studies Dept., the Quest Interfaith Program, the Peace-building Minor, Women’s Studies, and International Relations.

Dr. Sarah Friebert is the director of the Haslinger Family Pediatric Palliative Care Unit at Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron, Ohio and an internationally recognized expert in the field of pediatrics. She will talk about her work, which involves the nature of palliative care for children and how it fits into the idea of population health.
The Carpenter Lecture brings international and national speakers to campus to address timely issues in health care. The lecture series, made possible by the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation of Philadelphia, was established in 2003.
