Mars One co-founder to speak at Bridgewater College

bridgewaterDutch inventor and entrepreneur Bas Lansdorp has made multiple breakthroughs in the field of science in technology. As co-founder and CEO of Mars One, his goal is to put humans on the planet Mars by 2025.

Lansdorp will speak at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, in Cole Hall at Bridgewater College. The program is sponsored by the Harold H. Hersch Education Fun and is free and open to the public.

The Mars One plan consists of cargo missions and unmanned preparation of a habitable settlement, followed by human landings. In the coming years, a demonstration mission, communication satellites, two rovers and several cargo missions will be sent to the planet. These missions will set up the outpost where the human crew will live and work. The goal is to add a new crew every two years to expand the colony.

Mars One plans to send its first unmanned demonstration mission to Mars in 2018 and has a contract with aerospace contractor Lockheed Martin for this mission.

Lansdorp earned a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Twente located in the Netherlands. He worked for five years at Delft University of Technology and in 2008 founded Ampyx Power in order to develop a new, viable method of generating wind energy. In 2011 Lansdorp sold his majority interest in Ampyx and launched Mars One.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to approximately 1,800 undergraduate students.
