liberty-flames21Liberty’s season-opening victory over Delaware State on Saturday at Williams Stadium helped the Flames move up to No. 13 in the latest FCS Coaches poll.

Both FCS polls were released earlier this afternoon with the Flames moving up one spot to No. 13 in the FCS Coaches poll. Following the Flames’ win over the Hornets, Liberty remained ranked No. 15 in the STATS FCS Top 25 poll.

The Flames opened the year with a 32-13 victory over visiting Delaware State, Liberty’s first season opener at Williams Stadium since 2008.

The win also marked Liberty’s first season-opening victory since 2010, with the Flames suffering losses to FBS programs each of the last four years.

With four-time NCAA FCS national champion North Dakota State falling to Montana in the opening week of the year, a new team took over the No. 1 ranking in both polls.

Sam Houston State, who gained 671 yards on Big 12 member Texas Tech in a 59-45 loss, moved into the top spot in the FCS STATS Top 25 media poll.

Coastal Carolina, Liberty’s conference rival, opened the year with a 38-35 road win at Furman and took over the No. 1 ranking in the FCS Coaches poll.

The Chanticleers spent the final two weeks of the regular season at No. 1 in the FCS Coaches poll in 2014 before Liberty upset the Chanticleers, 15-14, during the last regular season game of the year.

Following Montana’s win against North Dakota State and a one-point setback to top 25 member Cal Poly, the Grizzlies moved into No. 8 in both polls. Liberty hosts Montana at Williams Stadium on Sept. 19 during Parents and Athletics Hall of Fame Weekend.

Before the Flames host the Grizzlies, Liberty will take to the road for the first time this year when it travels to Morgantown, W.Va., to face West Virginia on Saturday. Kickoff from Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
