virginia footballUVA quarterback Kurt Benkert’s third picksix of 2016 proved decisive in a 27-20 road loss at Wake Forest on Saturday.

Virginia (2-7, 1-4 ACC) had rallied from a 17-6 halftime deficit to take a 20-17 lead on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Benkert to Taquan Mizzell with 23 seconds left in the third quarter.

A third-down pass from Benkert near midfield was intercepted by Cameron Glenn and returned 41 yards to the Virginia 11, setting up a 36-yard Mike Weaver field goal that tied the game at 20-20 with 7:51 to go.

It was another third-down pass on UVA’s next drive that would be the difference. On third-and-22 from the Cavs 13, Benkert threw late and over the middle near the first-down marker, where Jessie Bates picked off the pass and returned it 39 yards for a Wake touchdown with 6:47 left.

Benkert finished 20-for-39 passing for 190 yards with two touchdowns and the two interceptions.

Wake Forest (6-3, 3-2 ACC) outgained Virginia 309-296. QB John Wolford was 9-of-10 passing for 83 yards and a touchdown, and ran for 94 yards on 16 attempts.

Mizzell had 80 yards on 16 rushes for UVA, and added a team-high 79 yards on six catches.
