kathe-manevalSchool Board Chairman Kathe Maneval has announced her intention to run for re-election to the Ward D Seat on the Waynesboro School Board.

Maneval has served on the School Board for the past eight years, serving as chairman for three years and vice chairman for one year.  She has also been a member of the Valley Vocational Technical Center Board of Trustees for four years.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the children and families of Waynesboro,” Maneval said. “Waynesboro is blessed to have talented and dedicated teachers and staff who are committed to helping every child succeed. We have made great strides in increasing student achievement by targeting our instruction and directing our limited resources into methods that produce positive results.  But we continue to face the challenges of increasing benchmarks and decreasing resources.  It will continue to take creative solutions and an even closer scrutiny of our expenses to meet these challenges.”

During her tenure on the School Board, Maneval has been actively involved in the establishment of many programs that have benefitted the citizens of the City of Waynesboro.  She was instrumental in the formation of the Wayne Hills Preschool Center and the expansion of that program to serve more of Waynesboro’s children. She also oversaw the relocation of the Adult Basic Education program back to Waynesboro.

Following the attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Maneval helped see to it that security upgrades were funded and provided to all of the schools in Waynesboro.  She was actively involved in navigating the Superintendent search following the retirement of Dr. Robin Crowder, which brought Dr. Jeff Cassell from Smyth County to our school division.  Perhaps most importantly, her background in accounting has been an asset to the School Board especially as it has managed difficult budgets and reduced revenues.

“I am running for re-election because I believe that we need an experienced School Board member with a background in education and accounting to help guide our school division along the challenging road ahead.  I would be honored to continue to serve the children and families of Waynesboro,” said Maneval, who earned a bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College and a master’s degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania.

She holds a certificate as a Certified Public Accountant (not licensed in Virginia).  She currently serves as Valley District Chairman for the Boy Scouts of America Stonewall Jackson Area Council and as Committee Chairman for Boy Scout Troop 73.  She has also served as Treasurer for Westwood Hills PTO, Kate Collins PTO and the Waynesboro High School Band Supporters.

Maneval has four children, three of whom are in the Waynesboro Public Schools.  Her eldest child is a graduate of Waynesboro High School and is a freshman at The College of William and Mary.
