Motorists using westbound Interstate 64 in Rockbridge County should be alert for traffic-pattern changes beginning Sunday, May 8. The change allows contractors to begin the next phase of work in the $15.5 million rehabilitation of the Maury River bridges, between mile marker 53.3 and 55.3 near Lexington.
Westbound I-64 traffic will taper to a single lane and use a median crossover to access the eastbound side of the interstate. After crossing the bridge, westbound drivers will follow a second crossover to return to the I-64 westbound mainline. Eastbound traffic throughout the work zone will be limited to the right lane.
On Sunday afternoon, contractors are scheduled to begin pavement-marking operations to guide motorists through this traffic-pattern change. The work should be complete by the morning of Monday, May 9. Line-painting is weather dependent, so this schedule is subject to change.
The speed limit on I-64 through this work zone is 55 miles an hour. Final completion of the Maury River bridges project is scheduled for summer 2017. All work is weather permitting.
