Inside the Numbers: #6 Virginia takes the Charleston Classic

uva-basketballPack-Line took a half off Virginia gave up 39 points to George Mason on 53.6 percent shooting in the first half of Sunday’s Charleston Classic final, and the Patriots scored 1.35 points per possession in the opening 20 minutes.

The UVA offense was the reason for the 47-39 halftime lead. The Cavs shot 60 percent from the floor and put up a blistering 1.67 points per possession in a hyper-efficient first half.

The Pack-Line came around in the second 20 minutes, holding Mason to 33.3 percent shooting, including 2-of-10 from the three-point line, and the Patriots’ efficiency went down to .82 points per possession in the second half.

Which is more like it.

The overall effort dropped Virginia a few notches in the KenPom.com defensive efficiency rankings, to eighth, with the Cavs giving up .917 points per possession through five games.

The offense is rated seventh nationally, scoring 1.14 points per possession.

How about that LP? That was an impressive stat line from London Perrantes: 16 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from three, to go with 11 assists.

Three threes, a runner, a layup, and 11 dimes.

Also had four rebounds and a steal, and just one turnover.

Nice night for Brogdon Malcolm Brogdon seems to do what is needed of him when it’s needed of him. So when he has a couple of off-nights, as he did in UVA’s wins over Bradley (13 points on 5-of-13 shooting) and Long Beach State (10 points on 3-of-11 shooting), you don’t want to get too upset.

Except that you do, of course, because you’re a Virginia fan.

So anyway, Brogdon had a Brogdon-worthy night Sunday, putting in 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting.

For the season, Brogdon is averaging 15.4 points on 43.1 percent shooting from the floor and 29.2 percent shooting from three.

The shooting from the field is fine, in line with his career average, actually a tick better (he shot 42.2 percent from the floor in 2014-2015). The shooting from three is worrisome (Brogdon was 34.4 percent from three last season and 37.0 percent from three two years ago).

Hope the message has been sent to Tobey Mike Tobey was on the bench for the start of both halves, after being benched to start the second half of Friday’s semifinal win over Long Beach State.

Tobey played with a rare fire Sunday, scoring 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting and pulling down a team-high eight rebounds in 20 minutes.

God love Jack Salt, but the freshman, who got the start in place of Tobey, shouldn’t be getting 18 minutes by the time Virginia heads back out on the road to Ohio State in December.

Salt is, to put this charitably, still doing his college best to figure out the intricacies of playing post defense in the Pack-Line. Putting it uncharitably, he’s been a liability.
