I-64 Afton Mountain closures end

Contributors

afton mtnStabilization of the Afton Mountain slope above Interstate 64 has progressed to the point where closures of I-64 are no longer necessary. The final closure was completed just before noon today. Engineers with the Virginia Department of Transportation determined that the remaining soil can safely be removed without restricting traffic.

The slope stabilization project will continue with a single lane closure while the remaining soil is pushed to the bottom of the slope and trucked to a disposal area. There will be intermittent closures of the right westbound lane between 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday for the next five weeks. The lane closure will extend from the project site at milepost 100.3 approximately two miles to the east. Motorists should be aware that the work may be suspended during rain or foggy conditions to ensure the safety of the personnel working on the project and motorists using the highway.

The schedule will be modified for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend. As with other VDOT projects across Virginia, work on the project will be suspended from noon, Friday, May 24 through noon,Tuesday, May 28.

The project involves removal of an area of unstable soil from a slope on Afton Mountain above the highway at milepost 100.3 in Albemarle County. Once the soil is removed the slope must be graded and the surface stabilized and dressed to prevent erosion and additional shifting.

Motorists should check VDOT’s traffic information web site, www.511virginia.org, or call 511 for real-time information about traffic conditions and delays. Android and iPhone users can also download a free 511 app that provides real-time traffic information based on their location.
