Purifying your tap water can be a daunting and expensive task if you utilize tools such as water filtration systems (although, sometimes, these are the best methods of making sure your tap water is clean), but there are numerous ways which you can actually add some of your own integration into your water system yourself. In this DIY guide, we’ll tell you how to purify tap water at home on the fly so you can rest assured that when things like “boil orders”, extra sediment, and even more issues can cause water contamination problems, you can literally purify it yourself and not have to worry.  These methods are above and beyond your typical water filtering pitchers that you can use in your fridge.

Boiling Your Water

Boiling has been around for centuries, and sometimes places have “boil orders” when a contaminant is usually a bacteria or virus-based contaminant. You need to boil the water on medium to high heat, and when it’s done let cool for a little bit before use. The only downside aside from the taste (boiled water has a taste of its own that some people don’t like… think a constant taste of hot water even when cooled) is that it’s not the best method of purification and doesn’t get rid of all of the contaminants (like sediment, etc.) from your water.

This method of purification is actually one that many people don’t know about, but one of the most effective, especially since Iodine is a great antibacterial. You can get the iodine in tablets, crystals, or even a soluble solution. You literally just put the recommended amount in your tap water, and then let it sit for about a half hour. This method however is not recommended for pregnant of nursing women. Many people don’t like the taste either.

Chlorine is one of the most popular chemicals that is used to treat water. Water suppliers of big cities and public water systems often use chlorine in small amounts to destroy contaminants in your water. The downside is that too much chlorine can actually be very dangerous for you. So some people choose to filter and treat their chlorinated water. Chlorine is a great way to sanitize and purify water in just a matter of minutes and comes in a variety of forms.

Home Filtration Systems

These are very common and are becoming even more popular. Most brands even claim to get rid of up to 99 percent of contaminants by using multiple types of filters, and for even further sanitation, some even come with additional reverse osmosis kits which you can get for a good price. The only real downside is that home filtration systems are one of the most expensive options, but it’s normally only an expensive option once. Once you have a water filtration system installed, some even offer self-maintenance so you don’t have to constantly replace filters, and update them.

The New UV

Ultraviolet light is a very strong sanitizer and purifier, but it’s primarily meant for bacteria and viruses. It uses ultra-concentrated UV light in order to kill bacteria in your water after a matter of minutes. It’s somewhat new, and is more designed for select purposes as it doesn’t get rid of solid contaminants.

If you’re looking for the best solution to purify your water, you would greatly benefit from a water filtration system. The main reason is that because microscopic elements can sometimes be present in water, these contaminants aren’t destroyed by the other methods, but are by using a water filtration system.
