How to know it’s time to call it quits with your dentist

Have you been chatting with your friends and they seem to be so happy with the dentist they are going to? Perhaps you have not liked something your dentist has started doing it and you are considering switching dentists. These are all good reasons to switch, but not necessarily. The top dentist in Lexington KY is here to talk about how to know it’s time to call it quits with your dentist. The answer may surprise you. Keep reading to learn more.

Do you not like the dentist or not like the dental office?

The first thing to ask yourself is why you are no longer happy with the current dental practice you are going to. One of the reasons may be because you don’t feel comfortable. Is that because the dentist or the dental practice is making you feel uncomfortable by the environment or something one of them is doing or just unhappy with having to go to the dentist because it’s not typically a place you enjoy. It’s very normal to have a fear of the dentist but that should not hold you back from seeing them. In fact, this should not make you want to choose a new dentist. It should just be something you realize that you dislike. With that said, if it is more than just feeling uncomfortable because it is a normal trip to the dentist, you may want to look at other options.

Are they not taking your insurance?

If you have insurance and suddenly they are not taking it anymore or there is another dental practice that can cover a part that your current dentist is not covering, you may want to switch to another dentist. You can let them know this is the reason and they may be able to move some numbers around so that you don’t go. You don’t want to waste a lot of money potentially though if your insurance is suddenly not being taken and it is elsewhere.

Does it take you a long time to get an appointment?

How long is it taking you to book an appointment? If each time you want a cleaning you need to wait a couple of weeks, that can get a little annoying. It’s important that you are able to get within that week if it accommodates your schedule so that you can get your teeth cleaned at the correct time each and every time. This is another reason why you may want to switch dentists. Also, you always want to look out for a dentist that can see you during an emergency. If something happens and your tooth comes out or worse, you want to know that they are reliable and will be able to see you in a timely fashion during an emergency.

Is the environment not quite like it used to be?

Has the dental environment just changed? Perhaps some staff members got switched around? Perhaps you are just not as comfortable as you once were. If you have a friend that has raved about their dental experience there’s a good chance the dental environment at the practice you currently are going to has changed. We recommend giving it one more try, perhaps they were just having an off day. If not, it will be time to change dentists.

Is there a new dentist in the office?

Is there a new dentist that is at the practice? Does that mean that you need to start with them and you are worried about your communication with them? Sometimes a dentist will move or retire and that means there will be a new dentist at the practice. This is normal. You may want to give that new dentist a chance and have an appointment with them. They still will have all of your old files from the previous dentist and since they are used to how the old dentist ran the dental practice, they will be more understanding of things you are saying. If you have not heard good things about the new dentist, however, it may be time to look elsewhere.

Are you moving?

Are you moving? If you are moving across town it can end up being difficult to get yourself to the dentist. You don’t want a long commute just for a dental appointment. If your dentist is someone you truly trust though, it may be worth the long drive. If you are moving across the country or a state, however, you know that it is time to find a new dentist.

How long have you been going to them?

Have you been seeing the dentist for a long time? Do you have a relationship that has formed with them? If so, it may be harder for you to make the change. With that said, if you have only seen them a time or two, don’t be afraid to try a different dentist if you are not happy. You can even have the new dentist call and get your old records transferred.

As you can see, there are some questions that you want to ask yourself as to why you are no longer interested in this dentist. Is it simply because you don’t like going to the dentist in general or is there a good reason for it? Remember that it can be nice to get to know your dentist so starting out scratch means they need to start understanding you and your needs all over again. With that said, if there truly is a reason that will greatly affect you, it’s a good idea to go ahead and make the switch.

We hope that this article helped and you are either making amends with your current dentist or doing a switch. We wish you the best of luck.
