Becoming a hoarder is easy. You pick up one thing, like it, and then another and then another. Before long everything has its place, and everything has meaning. You enjoy the comfort and simply think of yourself as a nester.

But the problem is more severe than that and you are well aware.  For most people, by the time you get to that point, you realize things have taken a significant downward spiral in terms of aesthetic appeal.

The problem is that not enough people realize before they have a problem, and there is too much stuff to deal with.

But, you did. Then again, maybe you’re not that bad yet.

We are going to over five easy things to keep in mind to avoid becoming a hoarder and ensure that you have plenty of living space available for years to come.

Digitize Your Photo Albums Via The Cloud

If you’re over a certain age, it may sound a daunting statement. It’s as easy as setting up a Google Drive (or having someone help you) and scanning every photo you want to keep via phone or a proper scanner.

While it sounds like it can be daunting, if you don’t have a lot of time, there are plenty of print shops and stores as well as freelancers that will do so for a nominal fee.

If you don’t do it to get rid of those boxes of photos you keep in the attic, it at least will ensure that in the event of a catastrophe you have them backed up.

On average, a large amount of four-person families where the parents are over 40 have as many as a dozen photo albums in their collection.  Each one of these voluminous pieces can take up space that could be used to store other items, or even negate the usage for a big container or piece of furniture.

Storage units can make a major difference in how much space you are able to keep in your home itself. For as little as $50 a month, you can get rid of the things you don’t need without letting them go permanently.

A good storage unit can house as many as six pieces of furniture and various clothing and smaller accessories in boxes or bags.  That means clearing out your closet, your attic or even your basement or shed.

Regardless, it’s a simple way to store and regularly take an assessment of what you do and don’t use, and why you are holding onto it.
