Homes gearing up for career change

Story by Chris Graham

It was just another day for Richard Homes.

OK, so it wasn’t actually just another day.

The night before, Homes had learned that Augusta County voters wanted him to be the county’s new treasurer.

Homes, the deputy county commissioner of the revenue, won a resounding victory over Democrat Frank Nolen in Tuesday’s elections.

His immediate response: “I’m going to DisneyWorld.”

In truth, Homes, a Republican, is gearing up for a vacation later this month – “I planned it this way, win or lose,” he told The Augusta Free Press – to go hunting.

“I do the same thing every year right about this time. I don’t take any vacation time all year so I can use it all to get out in the fall. It’s always good to get away and recharge the batteries,” Homes said.

He will return with a focus on getting ready to assume the duties of county treasurer after the first of the year.

He plans to work with current treasurer Ellen Maddox to get acclimated to the new office – which is located just down the hall from Homes’ current set-up in the commissioner of the revenue office at the Augusta County Government Center in Verona.

Homes will take office on Jan. 5.
