Historical Society event examines Emancipation Proclamation

“Emancipation: Declaring a Concept of Freedom.”

Washington & Lee University history Professor Holt Merchant will explain the idea of freedom that was introduced into the nation’s psyche on Jan.1, 1863 with the Emancipation Proclamation.

Holt is the Augusta County Historical Society’s 2013 Stuart Speaker at the R.R. Smith Center for History and Art, 20 S. New Street, in downtown Staunton. Parking is available in the Staunton parking garage directly opposite the Smith Center.

The event is free for ACHS members, $1 for students, and $5 for all others.
