Hillcats drop doubleheader to Carolina

lynchburg hillcatsLynchburg dropped both halves of a doubleheader on Tuesday at the hands of the Carolina Mudcats. Carolina got a great performance from Steve Janas in game one and earned a 6-0 victory. Game two was a much better offensive showing for the ‘Cats, but also went to the Mudcats by a score of 8-3.

Carolina starter Steve Janas flirted with a perfect game in the first half of the twin bill, going 6.1 innings without allowing a baserunner. Clint Frazier ripped a single past the glove of the second baseman Eric Garcia with one out in the seventh for Lynchburg’s only hit.

The Mudcats got on the board early with two in the first on RBIs from Dustin Peterson and Joey Meneses. They made matters worse in the second with three more off Hillcats’ starter Mike Rayl. Eric Garcia had a bases loaded walk and Meneses picked up two more RBIs on a single to left field.

Sean Godfrey capped off the scoring with a leadoff home run to left in the fourth inning. The homer gave the Mudcats a 6-0 lead, which was the final score.

Game two looked like a pitchers’ duel, with five hits total through the first three innings, but the Mudcats broke the game open in the fourth with five runs on six hits. Carolina sent 11 men to the plate and were aided by three Hillcats errors.

Still trailing 5-0 in the sixth, Lynchburg mounted a comeback. The Hillcats scored three runs, two courtesy of the first home run of the year from Clint Frazier. Frazier blasted a ball over the left field wall that left little doubt. Paul Hendrix followed with a triple to right and scored on a wild pitch to close the gap to two, 5-3.

Carolina wouldn’t let the ‘Cats back in the game however, as they put up three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to reestablish the five run advantage, 8-3. The big blow came off the bat of Connor Lien, who hit his second homer of the year.

Lynchburg wraps up a four-game series in Carolina on Thursday at 7 p.m. Fans can tune into the action on ESPN Radio Virginia 93.3 FM and 1320 AM. The Hillcats On-Deck Show begins at 6:40.
