Waynesboro might soon be thinking green. “I would really like to see us working toward some green initiatives,” Waynesboro City Councilwoman Lorie Smith said at Monday’s City Council meeting, selling the idea of having the city use its waynesboro.va.us website to encourage more green-friendly thinking among city residents and having the city government work to increase its own efficiencies.
“It’s financial efficiency as well as conserving energy,” said Smith, who also suggested that the city could work to encourage more environmentally and economically focused design with residential and commercial developers.
“We need to stay ahead of the curve on these things,” Smith said.
Vice Mayor Frank Lucente is among those on board with Smith’s idea.
“We can combine our buying power to buy some of these things or allow our citizens to buy some of these things at a discount and really do something about our energy issues,” said Lucente, who pledged to work with Smith on developing a package of green proposals to bring back to City Council for consideration in the summer.
