Goodlatte wins Republican nomination in Sixth District: Virginia results

bob-goodlatte-afpSixth District Congressman Bob Goodlatte easily won renomination in Tuesday’s Republican Party primary.

Goodlatte, running for a 13th term, defeated challenger Harry Griego with 77.8 percent of the vote. Goodlatte received 18,891 votes to Griego’s 5,410 votes.

Goodlatte will face Democratic Party nominee Kai Degner in the November general election. Degner is a sitting member of the Harrisonburg City Council.

There was one major upset in Tuesday’s primaries in Virginia. Randy Forbes, the sitting congressman in the Fourth District, was defeated in his bid to win the GOP nomination in the Second District by State Del. Scott Taylor.

Taylor received 52.6 percent of the vote in a three-way race with Forbes, who received 40.6 percent, and C. Pat Cardwell IV, who received 6.8 percent.

Forbes had decided to run in the Second District after a court-ordered redistricting had made his Fourth District seat much more favorable for Democrats.

Taylor is a former Navy SEAL who is serving his second term in the Virginia House of Delegates.

Taylor will face Democratic Party nominee Shaun D. Brown in the GOP-leaning Second District race in November.

Democratic State Sen. Donald McEachin won his party’s nomination in the new Fourth, and will face Henrico County Sheriff Mike Wade in the November election.
