The game was tied at 42 with 14:00 to go after a Malcolm Brogdon runner in the lane when Tyler Cavanaugh broke through the Virginia defense for a layup that ignited a 6-0 Colonials mini-run.

The offensive onslaught would continue all the way to inside of five minutes, when a Yuta Watanbe layup at the 4:15 mark extended the GW lead to 68-59.

Virginia (1-1), behind Brogdon, would chip away at the lead. Brogdon scored 11 UVA points in a row the final two coming on a jumper with 2:01 to go that cut the George Washington lead to 70-66.

The ‘Hoos would get no closer. After a Colonials miss, London Perrantes had an open look from the top of the key that missed with 1:20 to go, and after the Virginia D forced another GW miss, Darius Thompson missed badly on a three from the left corner with 33 seconds left.

After a held ball gave the ball back to the Colonials, Brogdon stole a GW pass at midcourt, but he missed from the top of the key with eight seconds left, and George Washington was able to finish the game off at the foul line.

The stripe was key to the upset for GW (2-0), which was 23-of-28 from the line on the night, with Virginia going 13-for-16.

UVA shot 40.3 percent from the field (25-of-62) for the game, and was just 25 percent (5-of-20) from three.

George Washington shot 45.1 percent (23-of-51) from the floor and was 4-of-15 (26.7 percent) from three.

The Colonials outrebounded Virginia 37-33.

Brogdon had 28 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field and 9-of-10 shooting from the line to go with a team-high eight rebounds and team-high four assists.

Anthony Gill had 11 points in just 23 minutes due to early foul trouble that limited the senior forward to seven minutes in the first half.

Mike Tobey had 10 points, all in the first half, to go with seven rebounds.

Cavanaugh and Patricio Garino each had 18 points for GW.
