Generals get W in matchup of division leaders
Waynesboro got home runs from Julian Ridings and Jacob Hoyle, and the Generals bullpen contributed three and a third innings of scoreless, hitless relief to push the South Division leaders to an 8-6 win at North Division leader Winchester Monday night.
It was a wild game early on, with Waynesboro scoring twice in the top of the first and putting up a threespot in the top of the fourth, with the big hit in that inning a go-ahead two-run single by Devin Smith, to lead 6-5 after four.
The Generals tacked on a run in the sixth on a solo homer by Hoyle, his third of the season. After Winchester cut the lead to 7-6 on a sixth-inning homer by Alan Filauro, the Waynesboro bullpen took over, with relievers Kyle Allen, Joseph Lucas and Josh Bullock putting the clamps down on the Royals offense.
Ridings gave the pen some insurance in the ninth with a solo homer, his fourth of the season.
Waynesboro starter Eric Stout (2-1) picked up the win, giving up six runs, all earned, on six hits in five and two-thirds innings. Stout struck out seven and walked two.
Waynesboro improved to a Valley League-best 17-7 on the season. The Generals have a one-game lead in the South Division over second-place Harrisonburg.
Waynesboro is on the road again Tuesday at Woodstock.
