Game Notes: VMI travels to UNC-Greensboro for weekend series

Contributors

vmiVMI baseball is back in action Friday, when the Keydets open a three-game SoCon series against the Spartans of UNCG in Greensboro, N.C. Game time Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m., with games to follow Saturday at 2 and Sunday at 1.

Weather

Weather is a concern for the weekend. At press time, there was an 80% chance of rain in Greensboro Friday and a 60% chance for a good portion of Saturday. Fans should stay tuned to VMIKeydets.com and the @VMIbaseco Twitter page for up to the minute updates, and should also be aware that schedule changes and weather delays may cause game coverage changes.

How to Follow

Fans can follow along with the action via live stats and SoCon Digital Network broadcasts of all three games. In addition, a VMIKeydets.com audio broadcast is scheduled to be available for the games Saturday and Sunday, with Brad Salois on the call.

Probable Starting Pitchers

  • VMI RHP Matthew Eagle (5-1, 3.60) vs. UNCG RHP Hunter Smith (3-0, 4.58)
  • VMI LHP Brandon Barbery (3-2, 4.24) vs. UNCG LHP Bryce Hensley (3-0, 3.90)
  • VMI RHP Josh Winder (3-2, 3.40) vs. UNCG RHP Matt Frisbee (1-2, 5.62)

Notes

This is a matchup of two of the top teams in the league, and two of the top-10 in the country, in doubles. UNCG leads the SoCon with 69 two-baggers, and led the nation in that stat through last weekend. The Keydets ranked sixth in D1 and are second in the conference with 65.

This is also a matchup of two of the top teams triple-wise in the SoCon. David Geary of VMI and Andrew Moritz of UNCG are tied for the conference lead with four triples apiece.

Matthew Eagle looks to rebound from his first loss of the season last Friday – Despite the loss, Eagle remained one of only six pitchers at the D1 level to have five wins.

After struggling through his first three appearances of the season (0-2, 9.24 ERA), Brandon Barbery has allowed just three runs over his last 21 1/3 innings (3-0, 1.27).

Next Time Out

Following this weekend’s contest, VMI is back in action Tuesday against former Big South opponent Radford. Game time in Radford is set for 6 p.m.
