UVa Ranked No. 2 For Third Straight Week

  • UVa is ranked No. 2 in the AP poll for the third straight week.
  • Prior to this year, the Cavaliers achieved their last No. 2 ranking on March 8, 1983.
  • Virginia has delivered three of the 11 home losses by teams currently ranked in the top 16 of this week’s AP poll (Notre Dame, VCU, Maryland).
  • The Cavaliers have been ranked in the top 10 for the first 11 weeks of the season for the first time since 1982-83.
  • The No. 9 AP preseason ranking was UVa’s best since a No. 1 ranking to start the 1982-83 season.
  • UVa is one of three teams (Duke and Arizona) that have been ranked in the top 10 for 15 straight weeks dating back to last season.

 

Virginia All-Time vs. North Carolina

  • Virginia is 51-128 all-time vs. North Carolina in the series that dates back to 1910-11.
  • The Cavaliers are 6-65, including a 3-23 mark at the Smith Center, against UNC in Chapel Hill, N.C.
  • The Cavaliers posted a 76-61 win against the Tar Heels last season in Charlottesville.

Last Time vs. North Carolina

  • Malcolm Brogdon and Joe Harris each scored 16 points as Virginia defeated North Carolina, 76-61, on Jan. 20, 2014.
  • The Cavaliers, who led by 23 points in the second half, also received 13 points from Justin Anderson and eight points from Anthony Gill.
  • Kennedy Meeks scored 15 points and James Michael McAdoo had 11 for North Carolina.
  • Virginia made eight 3-pointers and turned 11 North Carolina turnovers into 17 points.

  • Tyus Jones scored 17 points, Quinn Cook had 15 and both made critical 3-pointers in the closing minutes, fueling a game-ending 16-5 run that gave No. 4 Duke a 69-63 victory against No. 2 Virginia, ending the Cavaliers’ 21-game home winning streak.
  • Virginia started the second half with a 16-4 burst and led by 11 with just under 11 minutes to play.
  • Malcolm Brogdon led Virginia with 17 points and Justin Anderson had 11.
  • Duke’s Justise Winslow had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
